What a mobile proxy is
A mobile proxy is an intermediary server that passes a user’s requests through a cellular carrier IP address. To websites and online services the request looks like a connection from a smartphone or another device on mobile internet.
Unlike datacenter proxies, mobile IPs belong to carrier networks. The key technical difference is CGNAT: mobile networks hand subscribers private addresses and route them outward through a shared pool of public ones. As a result, a single external IP is used by a large number of the carrier’s subscribers at the same time.
CGNAT is exactly why mobile addresses behave differently: hundreds of real people sit behind one IP, and sites account for that. It is also why they cost more — carriers do not hand them out individually, and a provider needs physical infrastructure.
What is a mobile proxy?
A mobile proxy is an intermediary server that routes requests through a cellular carrier IP address. The receiving site sees the connection as traffic from a mobile network user. Such addresses are normally issued through CGNAT, meaning one external IP is shared by many of the carrier’s subscribers at once, and they usually support IP changes — on an interval, on demand, or at the end of a session.
How the connection works
The sequence is the same with any mobile proxy provider:

How IP rotation works
Mobile proxies normally offer three ways to change the address. The difference matters before you buy: a forced IP change ends the current session on whatever service you are connected to.
- Automatic rotation — the address changes on a set interval. Good for spreading requests out, bad for long sequences of actions.
- On-demand change — the user triggers the change manually — via a link, a dashboard button or an API. Gives you control over the timing.
- Sticky session — the address is held for a set time or until a forced change. Needed wherever actions run as a sequence.
No mode guarantees the address will never change: a carrier can reassign an IP for technical reasons regardless of plan settings. That is a property of mobile networks, not a provider’s shortcoming.
How mobile proxies differ from datacenter proxies
The difference is not quality but origin and behaviour. A mobile IP comes from a carrier network and usually rotates; a static datacenter IPv4 lives in a data center and stays assigned to you for the rental term.

How is a mobile proxy different from a regular one?
A mobile proxy uses a cellular carrier IP; a regular datacenter proxy uses a data center or hosting provider address. Mobile ones more often support rotation and look to websites like a real subscriber’s traffic, but they cost more, have less predictable speed, and because of CGNAT their external address is shared with many of the carrier’s users.
Note the second-to-last row — it is usually presented as an advantage of mobile proxies, and for some tasks it genuinely is. But if what you need is your own address with nobody else behind it, a mobile proxy gives you precisely the opposite.
When you need a mobile proxy and when a static IP is enough
A mobile address matters where the connection has to come from a carrier network, or where the IP must change regularly. In every other case a static IPv4 does the same job more cheaply and more predictably. Task by task:

The last row is the most common misunderstanding. What tells a site to serve the mobile interface is the `User-Agent` and the viewport, not the IP address: responsive layout is checked with device emulation in the browser, and a mobile proxy is not required for it.
How to tell a real mobile proxy from a datacenter one
Selling datacenter addresses as mobile is technically easy and hard for a buyer to verify. There are a few ways to see the difference before the money is spent.
What to check
- Network type in IP databases — IP lookup services show not only the country but the connection type and the owner of the autonomous system. For a real mobile address that owner is a carrier; for a server one, a hosting provider or data center.
- ASN owner name — a cellular operator’s name instead of a hosting company is the fastest and clearest signal.
- Behaviour on rotation — after a change the new address should stay within the same carrier’s network rather than hop between data centers.
- Address range — mobile addresses come from carrier subnets; several issued IPs usually sit close together inside that range.
What to check before buying mobile proxies
This is a checklist for a conversation with any mobile proxy provider, not with us — we simply do not have them. The more of it a provider answers openly, the smaller the chance of an unpleasant surprise after payment.

Ask specifically about billing: some mobile plans are billed by rental time, others by data transferred. Loading image-heavy pages consumes many times more traffic than short API calls, and the bill can land nowhere near your estimate.
